The Informed Consent Process Informed Consent is a process of collaborative education and decision making that a prospective research participant must go through before they can freely volunteer to participate in a research study. As a research professional, your responsibility is to provide research study information to a potential research participant and to verify they understand all of this information both during and after the Informed Consent process. Only after the potential research participant completely understands all of the study information can they make an educated decision between participating in the study and choosing standard treatment. This is eliciting truly informed consent. This website will identify barriers to eliciting truly informed consent and suggest approaches and offer solutions.
