IRB Eliciting Truly Informed Consent

Project Author: Ryan Spellecy, Ph.D.

Ryan Spellecy is currently Assistant Professor of Bioethics and Psychiatry in the Center for the Study of Bioethics at the Medical College of Wisconsin, where he teaches in the Bioethics M.A. program, and holds a secondary appointment in Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine. He received his Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of Utah . In addition to teaching, Professor Spellecy is also the clinical ethics consultant at St. Luke's Medical Center in Milwaukee , WI , chairs an Institutional Review Board at Froedert Memorial Lutheran Hospital , and serves on several local hospital ethics committees, including the Milwaukee County Behavioral Health Division. Professor Spellecy's publications, teaching, and research focus on ethical issues in death and dying, autonomy, informed consent, advance directives, the intersection of Ancient Greek philosophy and modern debates in Bioethics, ethical issues in drug policy, particularly performance-enhancing drugs and dietary supplements, and ethical issues in mental illness and mental health.
